In America, the third Monday of January is a national holiday reserved for one of the most influential, revered civil rights activists and spiritual leaders the country has ever seen — Dr. Martin Luther King jr.
This day was declared a holiday in 1983 to honor arguably one of the greatest humans of the 21st century. It is a day marked with celebration, remembrance and most of all civic duty – volunteering in the community.
MLK was born in Atlanta Georgia in 1929 in the upstairs bedroom of a house that was owned by his maternal grandparents.

The two-storey Queen Anne style home was built in 1895 in the historic district of Auburn Avenue- he lived there until 1941. It consists of 4 bedrooms, a study, a parlor, a kitchen and dining room downstairs, and 4 bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs.
The site is a national historic site, and people come from all over the world to visit and pay respects to the late reverend. The King’s moved to another house later in life and lived their until his assasination in 1968.
Today we reflect on the life of this courageous human that embodied the struggle and journey of the black man — all over the world.
